Pronunciation
Collegium tries, wherever possible, to use the pronunciation of Latin and other languages appropriate to country and period. Over the years, the choir has undertaken considerable research in this area, and this page is designed to share our findings with other choirs. The arguments about the pronunciation of Latin are many, and the information below is, like any such research, subject to argument, but we hope, nonetheless that you will find it useful.
The tables attached to the links below have been designed so that they can be read and understood by anyone with a basic knowledge of French or German diacritic marks; phonetic symbols have been avoided.
Those wishing to make a more in-depth study of the way singing Latin varies according to date and place are recommended to read Harold Copeman’s excellent book on the subject: “Singing in Latin”.
