The choir aims to sing around four concerts per year. Rehearsals take place on the day of the concert (generally Saturdays), and for six or seven Wednesday evenings in advance, from 7.00 pm to 10.00 pm, at The Church of St Bartholomew The Great in West Smithfield, EC1 (nearest tubes: Farringdon, St Paul’s). Most rehearsals are rounded off with a few drinks in a nearby pub, and some members often go off for a meal to round off the evening.
Re-auditions are also held for the whole choir about once every four years.
If you are looking to join Collegium Musicum of London, please email the choir Fixer here.
Some of our concerts are quite expensive to stage, as often the choir collaborates with some of the leading soloists and instrumentalists in the country. In common with nearly all other choirs, our members pay subscriptions to assist towards expenses.
The current annual subscription rates are as follows:
Membership fee for the calendar year: – £60 (concessions – £40).
All singers, including those on probation, must also pay a £40 concert subscription per programme they take part in (concessions – £30). A ‘programme’ may either be a single concert or a concert which has more than one performance. This concert subscription will be reduced by 10.00 if you sing in a service or Christmas event prior to the subscription becoming due.
These include all those in full-time education or the unemployed. Special consideration will be made for others finding difficulty in paying subscriptions.
There’s a special concessionary rate for those under 25: pay just £10 to sing in any concert. No annual subscription, no per concert fee – just £10 to sing.
Please email the choir Fixer here with any queries you may have or to arrange an audition.
Following your audition, we will confirm within a day or two – usually by e-mail – if you have been accepted as a probationary member. During your probationary period you will be able to decide whether CML is the right group for you, and the choir will assess your singing ability, ability to blend with the existing voices, and whether the level of commitment you have shown is acceptable.
Probationary membership will extend for one of CML’s programmes.
Our Musical Director will write again, after your first concert, to say if we are happy for you to become a full member. And if you are content to continue singing with the choir at this point you will be required to pay the annual subscription (yearly or half-yearly rate, depending on the time of year you become a full member).
Format of the audition (10–15 mins)
Please prepare for your audition two songs of your own choice. One of these should be an unaccompanied folksong. If you wish to be accompanied for the other, please bring two copies of the music with you. You will also be given a sight-reading/quick learning test.
